Abdel Halim Khaddam, the former Syrian Vice President, commented that the United States’ decision to provide weapons to the Syrian opposition serves as a “political message” directed towards Russia, Iran, and the Syrian regime. In a statement to the Jordanian electronic newspaper Al-Maqar, which was broadcasted on Friday, Khaddam expressed the anticipation of Syrians regarding the outcomes of the American decision, considering it a significant advancement. However, the crucial aspect lies in the manner of delivering these weapons, whether through Turkey, Jordan, or by air.

Washington has officially announced that it has verified multiple instances of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime employing chemical weapons, including “sarin” gas on a limited scale. Consequently, the United States has decided to respond by intensifying its support for the Syrian opposition through the provision of weapons. Echoing this sentiment, British Foreign Secretary William Hague concurred with the U.S. assessment that forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have utilized chemical weapons, including “sarin” gas. Hague issued a statement today, affirming that the United Kingdom has presented evidence of chemical weapon usage in Syria to United Nations investigators. Collaborating with other allies, they aim to gather further information on the situation on the ground. Hague further condemned the Assad regime’s regrettable failure to cooperate with the investigating mission.

On Thursday, Britain declared that there is mounting evidence indicating that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad has employed chemical weapons and continues to do so. A spokesman for the British Foreign Office stated, “There is a growing body of compelling evidence demonstrating that the regime has used and continues to use chemical weapons, including sarin.” The spokesman additionally emphasized the importance of granting the United Nations Commission of Inquiry unrestricted access to investigate the situation on the ground in Syria and uncover the complete truth.
