LETTER DATED 21 FEBRUARY 1980 FROM THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AND MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF THE SYRIAN ARAB REPUBLIC ADDRESSED TO THE SECRETARY GENERAL

I would like to draw your attention to the danger emanating from the statements which were made by the Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and his Deputy Yigal Yadin concerning the so-called Syrian military concentrations, including thousands of tanks, in order to launch a military action against Israel. Those statements coincided with Israeli military movements in the occupied Golan. I would like strongly to deny these Israeli allegations which could be proved as mere fabrications if the United Nations observers in the Golan were requested to report on the situation. The Syrian Government views those Israeli allegations as a step which comes in the framework of preparation to launch a military aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic. Therefore, the Syrian Government would like to draw your attention to the dangerous situation resulting from the Israeli policy and it threat to peace and security in the region and in the world. The Syrian Arab Republic Government would like to inform the members of the Security Council as well as the Member States of the United Nations of this dangerous situation which has been disclosed by the statements made by the Israeli Prime Minister and his · Deputy in the last two days .

.

(Signed) Abdul Halim KHADDAM Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Syrian Arab Republic
