The sources have revealed that during his brief visit to Libya at the end of last week, the Syrian Vice President, Mr. Abdel Halim Khaddam, held Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan President, responsible for his recent statement expressing support for General Michel Aoun’s government. In response, Gaddafi justified his position by stating that he received the information from Colonel Mustafa Al-Kharroubi, the Libyan coordinator for Palestinian affairs, who had obtained it from Palestinian leaders. Khaddam then proceeded to provide an explanation of the actual situation in Lebanon as perceived by Damascus. Gaddafi assured him that he would understand Syria’s role and respond accordingly, but he also criticized Khaddam for the US-Syrian agreement. Gaddafi pointed out that the United States had bombed Tripoli in the west, destroying his house and causing the death of his child. He expressed disappointment that no Arab nation took action or called for a summit to address the US attack on an Arab country. Syria is now seeking support and solidarity, given the agreement it has made with the United States.

The sources described the meeting between Gaddafi and Khaddam as a challenging encounter that ultimately led to a mutual understanding.
