Syrian Vice President, Abdul Halim Khaddam, informed the Non-Aligned Movement conference that his country cannot support the resolution sought by the United States and Britain in the Security Council against Iraq.
Syria, the only Arab member in the United Nations Security Council, announced today, Tuesday, that it will vote against the efforts of the United States and Britain to issue a new resolution on Iraq.
Abdul Halim Khaddam, the Syrian Vice President, told the Non-Aligned Movement summit held in Malaysia that his country cannot support the resolution. He stated that if war breaks out, Syria would reshape the region but in a direction different from what the United States seeks.
Khaddam told Reuters on the sidelines of the summit, “There is no justification for proposing any resolution. The inspectors are doing their job in implementing Resolution 1441… Therefore, we do not agree with this project.”
Khaddam informed the summit that the United States has only succeeded in alienating people worldwide and that the policy of power can destroy and kill but cannot establish security. He said that those who want to take the path of war should read history well because aggressive military force is destined to be defeated.
He continued by stating that the goal of the war is to reshape interests in the Middle East to ensure American interests. He emphasized that this is very dangerous because it threatens the sovereignty and independence of member states in the United Nations.
Khaddam called on those advocating for war to seek peace and dialogue because war has serious consequences on the interests and security of everyone, including those who initiate the war. He also warned of further extremism as a result of waging war on Iraq.
