The dissident Syrian Vice President, Abdel Halim Khaddam, predicted the continuation of American strikes on the positions of the Syrian regime. He noted that President Donald Trump is bold in making decisions, unlike his predecessor Barack Obama, who had hesitant positions. Khaddam stated in an interview with “Al Watan” that the Assad regime is destined to fall and would have been a thing of the past without Russian intervention.
Describing the American strike on Al-Shairat airport in Syria, Khaddam said it was a long-awaited dream for Syrians and a glimmer of hope for a different future. He emphasized the years of killing and destruction caused by the regime’s military machine and its allies. In his statement to “Al Watan,” Khaddam expressed his initial optimism about President Trump, citing his audacity to make decisions and his departure from Obama’s reluctance to follow through on his statements.
Khaddam believed that Trump’s economic personality embodies determination, challenge, and adventure. He reassured everyone that his country’s agreements with Arab nations are of great interest to him. Khaddam stressed that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s strong relationship with the United States will benefit all countries in the region, considering it the largest supporter of nations in the region.
Regarding the American strike against the regime, Khaddam stated that he was not surprised and expects it to continue until the regime’s collaborators are exhausted and withdraw from Syria. He described the regime as dilapidated and emphasized that without Russian intervention, Assad would have already been a thing of the past. Khaddam mentioned that Assad’s supporters were taken aback by the firm American stance and highlighted that Washington did not inform Moscow of the strike until half an hour before its execution, sending a clear message about not crossing red lines.
Discussing the position of countries supporting the regime after the strike, Khaddam noted that Iran and Hezbollah were left confused. He pointed out dissatisfaction with Trump’s stance towards both parties on various issues. Khaddam mentioned that the Russians understand that direct or proxy confrontation with America is impossible, as the latter has the capability to worsen the situation in Russia. He believed that Putin cannot challenge the United States in Syria and suggested the possibility of an agreement between the two countries to settle their interests, leading to Assad’s worst days ahead. Khaddam also anticipated an evolution in the armed opposition that would resolve matters on the ground.
Commenting on the failure of Russian and Syrian defenses to counter American missiles, Khaddam stated that they were defenseless against the American strikes. He mentioned that the strike targeted a specific area, serving as a warning against any potential chemical attack by regime forces and their supporters. Khaddam urged Arab countries to adopt more positive attitudes, considering the bold Arab decision-making, particularly as nations that previously feared American failure have changed their positions. He called for courageous stances in standing for truth and against oppressors.
