Dear Mr. Barack Obama, President of the United States of America,

I would like to express gratitude on behalf of the National Authority to Support the Revolution in Syria and myself for your announcement regarding the downfall of the authoritarian ruling regime in Syria. Additionally, we appreciate your call for the President of the regime to relinquish power.

Mr. President, are you aware of the extent of the crimes committed by the ruling regime in Syria, as well as the immense loss of life and property suffered by the Syrian people? The persistence of this regime will push Syrians to take up arms after nine months of peaceful demonstrations. Those responsible for shedding the blood of innocent children, suppressing, arresting, and torturing them will face the consequences.

Our concern lies in the international community’s hesitation to take decisive actions that would put an end to the regime’s crimes and aid Syrians in breaking free from a regime reminiscent of fascist, Nazi, and apartheid regimes in Africa. This hesitation may result in a significant conflict that will not be contained within Syria’s borders but will affect the Arab region due to the demographic composition of its people. This conflict will lead to substantial damage not only in Syria but also throughout the entire region, with severe consequences for Arab interests, regional security, stability, and the mutual interests between regional and global nations.

Mr. President, I would like to present a segment of a letter sent by U.S. President Truman to Congress in 1951, outlining the global strategy of the United States. The Middle East section of the letter stated the following: “The countries of the Middle East often lag behind European nations in terms of industrial advancement. However, they hold immense importance for the security of the entire free world. This region serves as a crucial hub for land, sea, and air transportation connecting Europe, Asia, and Africa. The Middle East harbors half of the world’s oil reserves. No other region faces as much Soviet pressure as the Middle East.”

As you can see, Mr. President, President Truman emphasized the significance of the region and the peril of its falling into Soviet influence. Although the Soviet Union has since collapsed, the threat posed by Iran should not be disregarded.

The Syrian people are not only confronting Bashar al-Assad and his armed forces but also contending with the alliance between Bashar al-Assad and Iran. Iran employs all available means to shield Bashar al-Assad and his regime, given their control over Lebanon, Syria, the Palestinian file, and Iraq. If Bashar al-Assad’s regime were to collapse, Lebanon would be liberated from Iranian influence, including their proxy, Hezbollah. Syria would be free, and the Palestinian file would no longer be dominated by Iran. This change would also alter the situation in Iraq, diminishing Iranian influence.

Mr. President, we implore you to take these factors into consideration and assist you and your allies in removing this tyrannical regime. By doing so, the Syrian people can fulfill their aspirations of establishing a democratic civil state. We believe that all available means, including military intervention akin to what occurred in Libya, should be utilized.

We wish you success in your endeavors to support people in obtaining their civil rights, as guaranteed by the Human Rights Bill.

Warm regards,

Abdel Halim Khaddam Secretary General of the National comity to Support the Syrian Revolution
